The University is having a gas pipe replaced in the basement of Herringham. As a result, National Grid has isolated part of our gas supply for safety reasons.

We are pleased to announce that a plan to reinstate this vital service has now been agreed. It will result in some disruption, including a temporary break on Thursday 23 August in the supply of gas to the Park site.

The gas supply will be switched off from08:00 until 20:00onThursday 23 August 2018for a period not exceeding 12 hours, while the installation of a new gas pipe is completed.

The impact on most staff and students will be minimal, but there may be some disruption during August, specifically around 23 August. Leading up to this, there will need to be closures of some parts of the Park site. Full details are set out below. On the day itself, there may be disruption to the supply of hot water and some catering options. More details of this will be given to all staff and students closer to the time.

In the meantime and to safeguard students, staff and other building users, all users of the spaces are asked to respect the works areas barriers, and to keep away from the works activities as best as possible.

Your co-operation and understanding is much appreciated.

The works started on site week commencing30 July 2018with no interruptions to service.

Works will consist of the installation of a new gas pipe, which will enter the buildings in the basement of Herringham Building via the IT store located behind the Ladies’ toilets.

The route of the pipe within the University buildings will then run within the IT store at high level, and exit into the Herringham basement corridor and across the corridor at high level and into the Jebb plant room.

Access may be restricted in this corridor, and building users are asked to find another route when this area is out of bounds during the works.

Works will then continue within the plant room.

It will be necessary to create a working area for the delivery, offload and storage of large diameter gas pipes from National Grid’s supplier, Cadent, who will be managing the works locally.

Three parking bays between Tate and Acland have been taken out of service to facilitate this.

There will be deliveries of large pipes. These will be transported from this working area, entering the building through the Tate Library doors along corridors by Post Graduate areas, through the I.T training areas, and installed into the IT store cupboard, across the Herringham basement corridor, and into the Jebb plant room.

Alongside these works a separate team from Cadent Gas will be on site, undertaking a series of exploratory holes into the grounds to establish a route for a new plastic pipe, which will connect external to the building from a point in Regent’s Park outside our site.

The connection between the installation inside Regent’s property, and the new underground gas main will result in a loss of gas supply for the duration of the connection, and will result in a new, safe, and reliable gas supply.
